FAT,
DIET AND HEART
A
new study that examined close to 50,000 women says there is no connection
between fat rich diets and the risk of heart related ailments. That
could be true, for no one says that the cause of such ailments is
a fat rich diet. We are given to understand that eating saturated
fats would build up cholesterol levels and block heart vessels. Is
that true? That is the problem one would like to know more about.

MIND
AND HEALTH
Deepak
Chopra, the well known new-age guru says to change the print out of
the body you need to change the software of the mind. A health columnist
in today's newspaper agreed and went on to say how mind and heart
are connected. People who are freindly, modest and easy going sail
through the problems of life effortlessly.
I
think if only one can find joy in struggling with life - then life
can become less disturbing. A TV actress commited suicide yesterday,
saying she was fed up with life. Or rather its problems perhaps. But
most of these are created, often with malice and intent. If only one
can remove these from one's own mind - remove the anger and sense
of losing - then perhaps we can march ahead, which is the main thing.

EARTH IN CARS
Google
is tying up with Volkswagen to offer its mapping software to be used
like GPS systems. Anyone would be able to find out their location
using their popular earth maps.

COLAS AND CAFFEINE
Colas
contain caffeine, and this fact is not widely known. Drinking a bottle
a day regularly for some time created a craving, and not getting a
dose means getting a headache.
Coke
started as a drink that contained cocaine. When cocaine was banned,
the substitute found was probably caffeine. These facts are not very
well known, and should be known if one is to take control over what
he/she consumes.
Coffee
makes for a nice drink once in a while. But that decision is for everyone
to make. Mass manipulation with these compounds without adequate information
is an unfair practice.

CONTROLLING APPETITE
As
an individual one may feel like giving free vent to one's desires,
but we are also a part of a wider community - where there are rules,
norms, and laws that protect us. A show of appetite is somthing I
feel one should resist. Naked lust is animalistic. As humans we should
love ourselves as humans first. Someone once said that the whole idea
is not to be rid of desires, but to master them.

RED
MEAT AND BOWEL CANCER
A
study in the journal Cancer Research has linked excessive consumption
of red meat - beef/pork - to bowel cancer. The implication here is
that if excess use causes this condition, then even moderate or light
use over a long period could result in the same.
But
does this conclusion really follow? An excess amount is bound to create
some imbalance. Can light/moderate consumption also cause similar
sick states. This is something that needs to be clearly stated.

FRESH
AND NATURAL DOES NOT MEAN HEALTHY
The
Australian consumers' association, in a booklet published by choice
online, has tried to correct popular notions on health food. IT says
fresh and natural does not mean the stuff is good for you. Nor does
fat free mean less calories. A baked product need not be low in fats
at all. And a raspberry youghurt may not actually contain raspberry.
Another
statement that was revealing was on spinach: it is not a good source
of iron, as popularly believed. What they actually mean to say perhaps
is that the iron in vegetables is not absorbed as much as the one
in meat - heme iron.

APPLES
AND MEMORY
A
new research at University of Massachusetts has revealed the health
effects of eating apples in preventing memory loss. The study, conducted
on rats, found higher mental activity in specimens that were fed a
good amount of apple juice.

EXTREMES OF PASSION
Moderation
is the key to good health, and that applies to all desires. Wanting
something very badly, without control sooner or later gets one in
trouble. Whether it is money or any other desire, an urgent need easily
leads to falling in traps, for anyone can sense the urgency in the
behaviour, and then extract a good deal out of it.

HOW NOT TO OVERSLEEP
The
best way I have found to get up early within 7 hours or even less
is to go to bed as early as possible, say before 10 for sure. The
body automatically wakes up before 5, somtimes even at 4. The trick
is to go to bed early, almost proverbially.

WALKING
FOR HEALTH
The University of Texas, Austin conducted a small trial
on treadmills and found a 30 minute brisk workout good for patients
feeling low. It was as good as drinking coffee, or a cigaratte. The
effects - feeling vigourous and good, lasted up to an hour.
Walking
is man's best medicine.

TOP TEN ELIXIRS
The
forbes top ten elixirs for a long life:
-
Don't
oversleep.
-
Be
optimistic.
-
Have
more sex.
-
Get
a pet.
-
Get
a VAP.
-
Be
rich.
-
Stop
smoking.
-
Chill
out.
-
Eat
your antioxidants.
-
Marry
well.
The
4 th and 10 th tips seem just alright. A good pet and a good wife.
Numbers 6, 1, and 7 clash. A rich man is wont to sleep more and smoke.
For
antioxidants, try fresh, slender carrots in the winter season. Wash
them with water and eat them raw as I do. They come really cheap,
as I just bought them yesterday evening. Never purchased anything
so cheap - just a dime.

CANCER AND CHANTS
The
emeritus professor, Dr. Hari Sharma, at the Ohio State University
says that chanting verses from the Sam Veda and a religious text can
reduce the proportion of cancer cells! The remark is made in the context
of Ayurveda - the ancient Indian medical science.
This
seems quite unbelievable. The newpaper report that carried the views
ended on a lighter note by commenting that a hard rock song could
perhaps increase the proportion of mutant cells in the womb!
More
comments on this later.

COCONUT WATER, FEVER, AND BEVERAGE USE
Coconut
water has a very cooling effect when taken during fever. A lot of
fruits help as well. Skipping the morning bath, and altering the daily
schedule helps a lot to relax.
Yesterday's
newspaper carried an article on beverage use, and the author wished
if these could be banned or stopped. But the continued use was ascribed
to human weakness. She finally settled for moderation as the key to
health!
Dictatorial
tendencies too submit to moderation, when it is not possible to control
things.

DRINKING LOTS OF WATER
I
am back! Sorry for the interruption in blogs, but I thought there
should be some period of rest.
There
are many people, in my experience film actresses, who say drinking
lots of water helps. I normally consume at the most three glasses
of water in all forms combined. And haven't seen any adverse effects.
But I took the advise and have been drinking at least six to eight
glasses. The way to do this is to drink half a glass or more every
time you empty your bladder. The cycle goes on throughout the day.
So far I haven't noticed any major change in my level of activity.
But it seems like a healthy habit to drink lots of water and let it
drain all the waste and toxic material out of the system.
